The band's latest release No Line On The Horizon is on course to top the charts, according to latest figures from the Official Charts Company.
The Irish group's new LP has already achieved sales of more than four times its nearest rival and could become one of the year's fastest-selling albums.
The Beatles managed the most UK number one albums at 15, while Elvis Presley has achieved 11.
U2 first went to number one with War in 1983. Their only studio albums to miss out on the top spot are Boy, October and Achtung Baby.
