The U2 frontman was speaking to Jo Whiley and accidentally swore when he joked about Martin's personality on the show, calling him "a w***er".
After apologising for the slip, he continued: "Obviously he is a completely dysfunctional character and a cretin but he happens to be a genius melodist and I think up there with Ray Davies and Noel Gallagher and Paul McCartney.
"I think [Coldplay] are a great band and actually it turns out he's a great soul as well."
A BBC spokeswoman also apologised for any offence caused by the swearing and said that no complaints had been lodged.
