The ceremony was attended by singer Roger Daltrey and a troupe of fans who turned up on scooters in honour of the sticksman.
The plaque was awarded by the Heritage Foundation after English Heritage said that not enough time had passed for Moon to be honoured in this fashion.
Trustee David Graham said: "He was one of the great drummers of that era, it was right we celebrated him."
Actor Mike Myers has been cast to play Moon in an upcoming biopic of the musician's life provisionally titled See Me Feel Me (Keith Moon Naked For Pleasure).
