Drummer Lars Ulrich faced about 16,000 fans at the city's Globe Arena to tell them that the gig was off, reports AP.
He said Hetfield was taken to hospital shortly before the show and apologised for the cancellation, adding: "Trust me, none of you guys wanna hear me, Rob (Trujillo) or Kirk (Hammett) sing."
A spokeswoman said Hetfeld was now back in the US, having been suffering from a stomach bug and dehydration.
The US metal veterans were recently named as one of the headline acts for a new two-day rock festival in Hertfordshire named Sonisphere.
