The 24-year-old singer was speaking on ITV1's This Morning when she revealed that she had focused on religious songs as a teenager.
However, she added: "As well as me growing up and having all these new experiences as a young woman, I had an artistic breakthrough in Surrey with Dave Stewart.
"He said, 'Why don't you write down all these things you're going through?' After that, I didn't have an edit button."
Perry, who likened being named best international female at the Brit Awards to being given a knighthood, said that she has had no regrets about writing from the heart since.
