The Babyshambles frontman made the comments during an interview about his solo album Grace/Wastelands, which is released next week.
Speaking about his relationship with producer Stephen Street, Doherty said: "I had to use someone I could trust, really. You have to go by your instincts.
"Somehow, I had to preserve the nature of these songs which, to me - in my own up-me-a**e kind of way - are precious, insular, fragile, beautiful, melancholic songs. And yet, we want them to sell by the bucketload.
"So we needed someone who has integrity and can recognise a good song from a Razorlight song."
Borrell played with Doherty in an early incarnation of The Libertines. However, the pair famously fell out at the 2005 Carling Weekend festival, when Doherty is alleged to have headbutted the Razorlight star.
