The bassist was interviewed by oral historian and veteran journalist John Hughes for Washington State's The Legacy Project.
Novoselic explained that Nirvana never thought that they would be a massive band when they started out in the state's largest city of Seattle.
He said: "Living on the margins for so long, living in the underground scene it's like: 'Oh this will never catch on'.
"But it did, and it was starting to change where you had bands like Faith No More and Jane's Addiction.
"They were these rock bands but they were more like alternative or edgy. Then they paved the way for Nirvana."
Faith No More headline the Download festival at Donington in June, while Jane's Addiction will play Oxegen and T In The Park alongside touring partners Nine Inch Nails.
