Frontman Julian Casablancas told Rolling Stone that the group currently have three songs down for their follow-up to 2006's First Impressions Of Earth.
Casablancas said: "I would say it's going great. We have a lot of work to do, though. It feels like we're new. We didn't used to be honest - there would always be minifeuds over stupid s**t.
"Now, if Nick and Fab or anyone are saying they like it fast or slow, we'll talk about it, as opposed to saying: 'Well, I never liked you sister.'"
He added: "Some of the new stuff has a '70s vibe, like Thin Lizzy or Elvis Costello, but then some of it is bizarre music from the future that we're trying to tone down to sound catchy.
"So we're trapped between the future and the '70s"
The Strokes released their first album Is This It in 2001, months after the release of debut EP The Modern Age.
