Former sticksman Jimmy Chamberlin announced his departure from the band last week and explained that he could not "pretend I'm into something I'm not".
A statement on the band's website read: "Billy Corgan is currently searching for talented musicians to join him.
"When Jimmy originally auditioned for The Smashing Pumpkins, he was playing in a locally touring jazz band that was playing weddings and street fairs.
"It just goes to show that you never know where the next big talent will come from."
People interested in joining the band have been asked to submit a resume ahead of the audition in Los Angeles, together with a photograph, a digital file of their performance and any relevant video links of their work.
