Starr had performed separately at the show in aid of the David Lynch Foundation before McCartney's headline set, which he finished by calling his former Beatles bandmate back on to the stage.
McCartney said: "At this point we would like to introduce somebody to you who you know, you've heard his name.
"He's going to come out here and play you a little song this joyful night. Ladies and gentlemen: Billy Shears [Starr's Sgt Pepper's... pseudonym]."
Starr sang 'With A Little Help From My Friends' before playing the drums on McCartney's 'Cosmically Conscious', a hidden track from his 1993 LP Off The Ground.
McCartney then led the full ensemble of artists for a rendition of The Beatles's 'I Saw Her Standing There'.
Starr and McCartney had last played together in 2002 at a tribute concert for the late George Harrison.
