Lead singer Gruff Rhys told London Lite that the group were very particular about what would and would not go on the follow-up to 2007's Hey Venus!.
Rhys said: "This is a riot record. We decided to ban ballads. There's only one slow number, which actually isn't slow at all.
"Everyone has a veto [on instruments], so if something causes distress for one person, it's out. It's going to be quite a difficult album to play live."
He added that the band will only play outdoor shows for the time being because they don't want to "endanger the public" by playing the "high energy record" at indoor concerts.
Dark Days/Light Years is released on April 13.
