'The Lord Is My Shepherd' topped the hymns chosen for burials, while Elgar's 'Nimrod' from Enigma Variations was the most popular classical song.
The data was collated from more than 30,000 funerals in a poll commissioned by Co-operative Funeralcare. It showed that pop songs account for more than half of the music chosen for a loved one's final farewell.
"As more people choose non-religious funerals, so they incline towards contemporary songs with which they closely identify," said the company's Lorinda Sheasby.
