The singer, real name Natasha Khan, told London Lite that she tried to imitate Kurt Cobain's wife and Hole frontwoman Courtney Love when she was younger.
Khan said: "I was obsessed with grunge as a teenager. When I sang I tried to emulate Courtney Love but couldn't. It didn't fit with the songs I felt inside."
She added that she has never spoken to people as "Pearl", the character she met in a dream and recently unveiled on second album Two Suns.
Khan said: "I bought this blonde wig and dressed up as her, taking pictures and keeping them in my sketchbook. It's not like I went out talking to people as her.
"I wasn't like: 'This is my alter ego and I'm so crazy and weird and arty!' I mean, I love Ziggy Stardust but you have to be pretty f**ked up to live inside another character for years."
