The band's drummer Adam Ficek told NME that the former La's frontman had been impressed with the group after he appeared with them at recent Peter Doherty solo shows.
Ficek said: "[Mavers] said how much he loved what we do, how we play, how we look. Then Peter said Lee wants us to be his backing band.
"Lee said he's got loads of songs written and he'd like us to get involved. I'm not sure where it'll go from here, but it's enough to get excited about."
The La's released their sole, self-titled album in 1990, while bassist John Power left in 1992 to form Britpop group Cast.
Power rejoined the group in 2005 for a number of performances, including at that year's Glastonbury Festival.
