The band told The Guardian that their third LP Kingdom Of Rust was beaten to the top of the charts by less than a handful of purchases.
Drummer Andy Williams said: "We felt a bit unlucky last month. We got beaten to number one by four copies. Lady Gaga sold 46,200 and we sold 46,196.
"I'm not competitive at all, but when I did the maths I thought, that's four CDs, man."
Bassist Jimi Goodwin added: "Apparently, it's the most closely contested number one in the history of the charts."
The band previously revealed that they celebrated their chart success with "a monumental piss-up".
