The band's frontman told The Guardian that the retailers will not sell Journal For Plague Lovers because of the Jenny Saville painting on its sleeve.
Bradfield said: "This album could seriously damage us in a commercial sense. Already, supermarkets won't accept the album cover, which I am really startled at.
"You can have the Pussycat Dolls poledancing, but you can't [have this?] So already I'm thinking: 'Oh f**king hell, are we putting them off already?'"
Bassist Nicky Wire revealed that he suggested the band never release the album and instead "dig a hole and bury it and make it even more of an art statement".
However, Bradfield reportedly responded: "After I've done all that work? F**k off!"
Journal For Plague Lovers is released on May 18 and will be played in full on the band's UK tour later this month.
