The musician will share The Polar Music Prize with classical music composer Jose Antonio Abreu, the BBC reports. The award, which is presented by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, is split between a popular musician and a classical artist. Each will reportedly receive $128, 214 (£84,000).
The prize committee said that the former Genesis member had "boundary-busting artistry".
They added that the star not only had a "significant influence on the development of popular music", but that he also "redefined the very concept".
Gabriel and Abreu will be given their awards by King Carl XVI Gustaf in Stockholm on August 31. Past winners of the prize include Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Bruce Springsteen.
