The ‘I Do Not Hook Up’ singer told MTV News that she has a hand in every aspect of her recording process.
She said: "I don't listen to anyone on any records. I listen to myself and my gut."
The singer revealed that she was pleased with critics and fans' reaction to All I Ever Wanted, her fourth studio album.
"We worked really hard on it - really hard on it. So it's cool when it pays off...I don't ever want to do something I'm not proud of in 10 or 20 years," she explained.
"I want to make music I want to sing and I'm gonna be proud of."
The season one American Idol winner attributed "variety" as the key to her success in the music industry.
“The basic formula is variety. I never want to do the same song twice. I hate when people do that," she added.
