Gahan was taken to hospital last week after falling ill before a concert in Athens. His continued illness led to a further three gigs being cancelled.
A statement posted on the band's official website reads: "Doctors have advised that more time is needed to allow singer Dave Gahan to fully recover from his recent illness and ensure that the tour can resume shortly."
The three shows that have been cancelled are Warsaw, Poland (May 23), Riga, Latvia (May 25) and Vilnius, Lithuania (May 27).
Fans have been advised to hold on to their tickets until it is announced whether the concerts can be rescheduled.
Depeche Mode are currently touring the world in support of their 12th studio album Sounds Of The Universe.
