Bono introduced the scheduled headliner Baaba Maal at the start of the evening, describing the African artist as a "friend" and a "brother".
"We share the respect of Nelson Mandela's vision," said the frontman. "We need people to understand. We didn't make it yet but we are on the way. As we continue fighting poverty especially on the continent of Africa."
During Maal's encore, Bono and the rest of U2 returned to the stage to perform an acoustic version of 'One'. They then collaborated on a cover of Bob Marley's 'Feel Alright'.
The show ended with U2 playing their number one hit 'Vertigo', with Bono thanking the record label at the tune's climax.
