The London rapper's latest offering All Night Cinema contains a number of darker tracks, including 'The Day I Died', 'Doctor Doctor', 'Embers' and 'Blood'.
Discussing the gloomy tone, Jack told the Daily Record: "I think a lot about the kind of negative side of things. My girlfriend says I have a propensity to look at things from a dark point of view.
"I'm an upbeat person generally but I do see the negative side of life. The world's changed since the last album. It feels like a different place. Things are up in the air, the world is more unstable, people have lost their jobs and things are a lot tougher."
He added: "It was hard going back to the studio because I hadn't been there for a year. I had to reacquaint myself with working on my own and having to come up with ideas. It started very slowly and it was quite a depressing time because I was finding it hard to get any momentum going."
All Night Cinema will be released later this month.
