The 'Starz In Their Eyes' singer, who releases new album All Night Cinema on July 6, claimed that performing to a smaller audience can help gage their reaction better.
"I think if you're playing a song like 'The Day I Died' for the first time it's obviously better to do it in a smaller venue because you've got a captive audience and a lot of it's about the words, you can really put it across," he told STV.
"Obviously at a festival it's a little bit more difficult, but people have been reacting to that song so well, because of the story, the content, there's a punchline, and I think the chorus is just not at all what you expect."
Describing his new single further, he added: "When you hear the tune, it’s quite lilting, it’s a bit of an odd song really, but people have been really getting into it."
Just Jack's previous album Overtones reached number two in January 2007.
