The 'Be The One' singer claimed that he recorded the 2007 LP to appeal to a wide audience, despite not enjoying it himself.
"With the last record I got so low. I saw myself as an artist I wouldn't find exciting. That was something I found really hard to deal with. I didn't want to be generic or mainstream but I came through with a lot of similar artists that I was lumped in with," Music-News quotes him as saying.
"I'm not disappointed with the first record, I just feel it's not who I am. I made the album so people could understand it, maybe people who don't listen to music. I now realise you should never do that, you should only do it for yourself."
Peņate, 24, adopted a different approach for his new album Everything Is New and admitted that he was happier with the results.
"I just thought, 'Let's forget anything's happened. Let's make a record I'm immensely proud of, full stop'. From now on, I'm going to always do that."
Everything Is New is out now.
