More than 1 million tickets were sold for the 50-date tour at a rate of 33 seats per minute after they went on sale earlier this year. Jackson extended the London jaunt from 30 concerts to 50 in order to meet the demand of fans, who would have seen him performing until February 2010.
According to USA Today, the planned concerts were to include 20ft puppets, pyrotechnic effects, a hovering orb, mutant spiders, a moving bed and 3D visuals.
The King Of Pop was reportedly rehearsing at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on the night before his death last Thursday.
"He was trying, and succeeding, in structuring the biggest, most spectacular live production ever seen," said Johnny Caswell, co-owner of Centre Staging.
"By the time he left my facility, he had graduated through several studios and was on a soundstage taking up 10,000 square feet. They moved to The Forum, outgrew that and needed the height at Staples.
"The show was getting so damn big, they couldn't finish it in time. That's why they had to delay."
Yesterday, it was suggested that the late singer's siblings will tour together and possibly fill some of the scheduled O2 dates.
