The award-winning singer, who has not released an album in six years, credited music mogul Clive Davis with helping her revive her career.
She said: "When Clive called me, I was pretty ready to buy my island home [and retire], but he said 'No, you're going to sing again, people want to hear you'."
The star, who split from husband Bobby Brown in 2007, told journalists at the premiere of her new LP in London: "I hope that these songs stay with you for a lifetime."
Houston's comeback album I Look to You is due for release in September.
