The legendary King of Pop has dominated album charts across the globe, topping countdowns in France, Germany, Australia and Britain.
"The customer response to Michael Jackson's death has been staggering and unprecedented," Amazon spokesman Andrew Herdener said.
"We took more orders for Jackson CDs and MP3s in the first 24 hours after his death than we did in the previous 11 years of the Amazon music store."
Gary Arnold, senior entertainment officer for US music retailer Best Buy, added: "We're seeing a real outpouring from fans and consumers who are looking to connect and get past what's happened - the tragedy of his death - through attaching themselves to his music."
In Britain, the late star currently has seven albums inside the Top 10, with The Essential in pole position.
According to the Los Angeles Times, sales in the US have totalled 2.3 million, with over 1.1 million units shifted in the past week.
Meanwhile, Jackson continues to dominate singles charts around the world, with four entries inside the Australian Top 10. His 1988 hit 'Man In The Mirror' peaked at number two in Britain last month.
