Winds around the area were deemed far too strong for the band to play their set safely. The announcement resulted in a mass of boos echoing around the ground.
A source said: "The band were waiting in their dressing room but they didn't want to go on stage as the winds were swirling and the back of the stage was falling off.
"They really didn't want to let people down."
The weather caused the electricity to cut out and some festival-goers to be injured by flying debris.
Organisers are in talks with the band to see if they will play alongside Franz Ferdinand and Lily Allen tonight.
