The Metro Station frontman blamed hectic schedules on their lack of contact, but insisted that he is looking forward to supporting her on tour in September.
"We've been apart for so long, I can't wait to go on tour with her later this year," he told The Sun.
"She is very blessed, but her life is very stressful," he added. "I have way more respect for her than anyone I know. She's only 16 so I hope to handle it at 20 years old."
Cyrus, who recently split from Camp Rock star Demi Lovato, went on to praise the support his parents had given him.
"I am lucky to have very open parents," he said. "Regardless of all the stupid things I've done, they're just happy that I'm living the dream and earning my own money."
Metro Station released new single 'Seventeen Forever' on Monday.
