The Leicester rock group admitted that they are still a "cult band" in the US and said that breaking into the mainstream is proving problematic.
"You have to be U2 or Coldplay to get radio play," frontman Tom Meighan told XFM. "Americans are deluded - not all of them - they think they're ahead, but musically they're not. They're 30 years behind."
Meighan's band are among the favourites to win this year's Mercury Prize after making the shortlist earlier this week with their West Ride Pauper Lunatic Asylum LP.
Speaking about their upcoming UK arena tour, Meighan promised that their shows would be "really good to the eye".
"We're going to do something amazing with the cover," he said. "You know all the bugs on the middle pages of the inlay? It's going to be a set. I can't give too much away, but it'll be lovely."
