The group recruited the hitmaker after struggling to find direction when they started work on their seventh studio disc This Is Us.
RedOne, real name Nadir Khaya, worked on a number of songs for GaGa's debut album The Fame, including the chart-topping singles 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face'.
Band member Nick Carter told the Daily Star: "We racked our brains to rediscover who we were. We had to do something really different but still familiar. RedOne really wanted to be on our Black & Blue album - he said he'd studied us, and he's written songs tailor-made for the Backstreet Boys."
Playing down comparisons to GaGa, he added: "Lyrically, it's an album about love, not sex."
This Is Us will be released on October 5.
