The 27-year-old singer claimed that stress led him to destroy his 1972 Gibson ES-325 guitar at the end of the band's T In The Park set earlier this month.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Followill explained: "I got a bit angry after T In The Park and broke my guitar, so I have to get a new one. We have zero reasons to complain, but I do blame me breaking my guitar on being overworked.
"I would never, ever dream of doing anything to that guitar. It's moments like that where you realise you need a break."
Despite the star's wishes, the group have a 30-date tour of North America lined up, which kicks off on August 7.
He added: "We're trying to set new goals. I'm kind of embarrassed to say them. They probably involve yachts.
"Don't get me wrong. We're definitely enjoying it. I think insecurity drives us to always be better."
Kings of Leon's fifth studio album is expected to be released in 2010.
