The group famously underwent group therapy to overcome infighting, with the process documented in 2004 film Some Kind Of Monster.
Hammett told thelondonpaper: "We've rediscovered how much fun it was being in Metallica - you can say we've been learning how to fly again.
"We know how to deal with issues of contention because of what we went through - we're better equipped to deal with each other these days."
Regarding the omission of any tracks from 2003's St Anger on the band's current live set, Hammett added: "We had to make that album to get to the point where we could make Death Magnetic.
"It was the best album we could have made in very unusual circumstances."
