The popstars are both in the running for video of the year - Beyoncé's 'Single Ladies' and Lady GaGa's 'Poker Face' are up against Eminem's 'We Made You', Kanye West's 'Love Lockdown', as well as 2008 winner Britney Spears, who is nominated for her hit single 'Womanizer'.
Beyoncé and Lady GaGa's songs have also been selected for the best female video and best pop video awards. However, the pair face stiff competition from Spears, who will be hoping to continue her hat-trick of accolades in 2008 after scoring a total of seven nominations for this year's bash.
The nominees were announced earlier today in a video message by comedian Russell Brand, who will return as show host for the second consecutive year.
The 2009 VMAs will be held in New York on September 13, featuring performances by Green Day, Taylor Swift, Pink and Muse.
