The current Primal Scream man told XFM that his former group were criticised for their arrogance but knew that their songs were unique for the time.
Of album The Stone Roses, he said: "It has tremendously well crafted songs, great recording and it struck a note with people, strangely enough.
"It changed a lot of people's lives, least of all our own. Even before we made it, we knew it was going to be massive."
He added: "We knew the power that those songs held. And we knew that with a bit of magic dust in the studio, it was going to be an immense piece of music.
"It's a signature album of a time of great change in the world and we were spearheading the new guard. "
The Stone Roses is released in 20th anniversary special, legacy and collectors' editions on August 11.
