The 'Potential Break-Up Song' star, who announced the name change last month, told DS that the duo had "always wanted" to adopt a proper band name.
"When we started, we were so young and Aly & AJ seemed safe. It wasn't lame so we couldn't really go anywhere bad with that," she explained.
"But, we thought that now was the time to change because we have a new record coming out that doesn't sound anything like Aly & AJ and we just found 78Violet to be something that fit."
She added: "It's like an alter ego for us on stage. We become this other person and there's that transformation so I think it's something the fans will be surprised to hear. The new music is more us, it's definitely us but it's older. It doesn't stray from our sound and who we are."
Michalka can currently be seen alongside Vanessa Hudgens in Bandslam.
