The 'Dance Wiv Me' star, born Adam Wiles in Dumfries, Scotland, told ShortList the reason behind the new name.
Harris said: "My first single was more of a soul track, and I thought Calvin Harris sounded a bit more racially ambiguous.
"I thought people might not know if I was black or not. After that, I was stuck with it."
The producer also revealed that he had no problems with recording 'Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, La, La, La' for inclusion in a Coca-Cola advertising campaign.
Harris added: "Not at all - it's 2009, and an advert is a decent way to get your records heard. There are things that you turn down, like adverts for pancakes, and there are things that you think are cool."
