The group, who rose to fame in the 1980s with hits including 'Really Saying Something' and 'Venus', insisted that female acts struggle to achieve the same credibility as their male counterparts.
"It's always harder for girls. Ten years into our career we were still being asked, 'Have you ever thought about writing your own material?'" Sara Dallin told The Guardian.
The singer added that it is important for a girlband to have a unique appeal and went on to praise the Spice Girls.
"They were great. They had their own little images, like we did, but they just took it to another level," she said.
Bananarama release new single 'Love Comes' on September 7. The album Viva follows on September 14.
