The Scottish singer's This Is The Life LP topped the UK charts following its release in January 2008 and also performed well across Europe, reportedly shifting more than 2.5 million copies in total.
However, speaking to fans on Twitter, the 21-year-old insisted: "I have yet to make one penny from album sales. People don't realise how much it costs to make and release an album."
Despite performing regularly since making her chart debut, MacDonald also admitted that her concerts have not been any more lucrative.
She commented: "You don't have a proper idea about gigs. The money is all swallowed up by promoters and agents. I haven't made money from gigs."
MacDonald's second album will be released next year.
