Jones was found dead at the age of 27 in July 1969 in his swimming pool at Cotchford Farm, Hartfield, East Sussex.
An inquest at the time recorded a verdict of death by misadventure, though a number of books published since that time have speculated that he was murdered.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that Sussex Police received papers from an investigative journalist in relation to the death of Brian Jones.
"These papers will be examined by Sussex Police, but it is too early to comment at this time as to what the outcome will be."
Journalist Scott Jones, who collated the papers, told The Mail On Sunday: "There is no time limit on the review. But after 40 years of mystery, anyone who values Brian's reputation will be happy to wait for the outcome."
