The 34-year-old singer's latest offering Come to Life is said to have a darker edge, leading to speculation that it was inspired by her split from husband Daniel Johns.
In an interview with the Daily Record, Imbruglia explained: "It's weird because I know some people would read into some of the songs on the album and think, 'Oh, is that about this or that?'
"There is a song on there, 'Scars', which people are going to read things into but I wrote that when I was in a really happy place quite a few years ago. Some of the happier songs were written more recently."
Though the star's greatest hits collection was released in 2007, Imbruglia's fans have had to wait four years for her to release an album of new material.
Discussing the delay, she revealed: "I just take a really long time to make a record. It takes me that long to write that many good songs."
Come to Life will be released next month.
