MTV has confirmed that Janet Jackson is to open the Video Music Awards.

The singer was earlier reported to be in strenuous rehearsals with 20 backup dancers for the tribute to her late brother Michael. Choreographers Frank Gatson and Travis Payne were suggested as creators of the dance routine she will perform.

However, MTV has announced that while Jackson will honour the King of Pop with her special appearance, Gatson and Payne will not be involved in staging the act.

The 43-year-old has won nine VMAs during her career, while Michael won several awards for his 'Thriller' video.

Their brother Jermaine earlier denied that Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown have pulled out of a tribute concert scheduled for September 26 in Vienna.

The 2009 VMAs will be broadcast on September 13 from New York City.
