The singer was booed after he interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for best female video to suggest that Beyoncé would have been a better winner.
Speaking on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM show, VMA host Brand said: "In the past I've made mistakes and done things a little bit daft.
"I know Kanye and I know he's a nice bloke. We all make mistakes in life... We're all people, these things are a bit silly, no-one died."
However, he added that he felt sorry for 19-year-old Swift, saying: "Taylor Swift's a young kid, isn't she? Yeah, you can't make a pretty girl cry."
West later issued an apology to Swift, admitting that he had been wrong to steal her moment in the spotlight.
