The guitarist sent Brown a song to use on his new album My Way, but Brown revealed that he was persuaded not to use it by his son.
"[He] said, 'Look dad, was he looking out for you back then? Are you sure you wanna do that?'," the singer told BBC 6 Music.
However, he praised Squire's musical skills, commenting: "I could have fitted on the first three minutes of the tune, it was pretty good. He definitely did it with me in mind because it had electronic, hip-hop drums on it and I thought, 'Whoever's done that must have heard me solo stuff'. He's still got it, it's good."
The Stone Roses released two studio albums in their 12-year career, which included hits 'Waterfall', 'I Wanna Be Adored' and 'Love Spreads'.
Brown and Squire have both stated separately that they would never re-form the group.
Brown's new LP My Way is released on September 28.
