The group was founded in Detroit by the Hackney brothers Bobby, David and Dannis in 1971 but their only album session was aborted when they refused to change their name for Columbia Records president Clive Davis.
Def told Filter: "It's going to be great. These dudes were pre-Sex Pistols, pre-Bad Brains, pre-all that s**t, and nobody knows them. I don't understand how the whole world could forget them."
He suggested that he may collaborate with Roc-A-Fella co-founder Damon Dash on the project.
Dash told XXLMag: "Anything Mos wants to do I'll do cause I think he's intelligent. I think he's a great ambassador for hip-hop.
"I personally don't like to talk about things until it's done. So when it's done, when it's ready - all I'm saying is that Mos Def is a really ill dude."
The seven surviving Death recordings were released by Drag City under the title ...For the Whole World to See in February this year.
