Matthews: 'Jones told me not to drink'

Cerys Matthews has said that fellow Welsh musician Tom Jones advised her not to drink alcohol before her live performances.

The ex-Catatonia frontwoman performed 'The Ballad of Tom Jones' with Space in 1998 before dueting with Jones himself on his cover of Frank Loesser's 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' a year later.

Matthews told The Guardian: "Tom Jones told me not to drink before going on stage.

"You grow up with all these myths about rock 'n' roll behaviour, even if the stars are on a rollercoaster to hell. His advice was so simple, but it really does work."

She added: "I was performing once with Catatonia in Germany when I fell over the monitor in the middle of the stage.

"I might have got away with it if I hadn't been mid-note. As it was, that note sounded terrible. This was, of course, pre-Tom Jones's advice."
