The singer-songwriter made the comments during a live performance of the Off My Rocker At The Art School Bop album track 'Bad Reputation' at London's Borderline venue last night.
Haines said: "In the unlikely event that any of you find yourselves having to perform this song in front of 5,000 Ricky Gervais fans, my advice to you is don't do it. Borne out of bitter experience."
After the first chorus, he paused and added: "It was the Gary Glitter bit that the Ricky Gervais fans really didn't like.
"It was odd considering he had just told a joke about raping a 70-year-old woman, but anyway."
Towards the end of the song, he said: "That was the point where the abuse really started."
Haines did not confirm when the incident took place, though he performed the track at the Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People concert last December, which also featured Gervais on the bill.
