The star, who plans to release a solo album and appear in two London plays next year, told the BBC that he does not want to reunite with the band purely for the money.
"I'm too busy next year. Maybe the year after that," he said. "See how it goes. When it needs to happen, it will fall into place. It's more a way of life than a band for me. I'm not going to jump up there and play the songs for some money - if it feels right then it will fall into place."
Barat also stated that he has not spoken to Pete Doherty "for a while", although he keeps receiving text messages from fans pretending to be his old bandmate.
"I keep getting kids texting me pretending to be Pete, which is a bit confusing because I never know when it actually is [Doherty]. Without realising, I could be harming my diplomatic relations with Pete by sending reactionary texts."
Doherty announced in July that The Libertines were planning to regroup for a new album and tour in 2010.
