The 19-year-old picked up six nods, including one for artist of the year. Jackson scored five posthumous nominations, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The American Music Awards voting process is calculated by sales and radio data provided by Nielsen. This allowed the late King Of Pop's compilation LP Number Ones to be included in the album of the year category, in which he is up against Swift for Fearless and Lady GaGa's The Fame.
Jackson is also nominated for artist of the year, favourite pop/rock album, favourite soul/R&B artist and favourite soul/R&B album.
Other nominees include Kings of Leon, Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Miley Cyrus and Green Day.
The American Music Awards will be broadcast on Thursday, November 22 on ABC.
