The singer, who won American Idol in 2005, admitted that she feels less anxious now compared to when her second album Carnival Ride was released in 2007.
"I feel like the second album had the most pressure for me," she told Billboard.
"I want to be somebody in the music business, not just somebody that [people say], 'Oh, yeah, five years ago she won that. Where did she go?'.
"So making Carnival Ride was pretty stressful, but on this one I feel like I'm home.
"I'm in the music business. When people mention names like Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban and Brad Paisley, sometimes my name is in there too."
Underwood recently confirmed that she co-wrote a number of songs on the new record alongside Luke Laird, with whom she collaborated on 'So Small', 'Last Name' and 'Twisted' for her Carnival Ride record.
Play On is released on November 3.
