The singer, who was widely ridiculed for adopting a faux-American accent at the Brit Awards in 2007, claimed that the media has created an image of her as a "bitch".
"I think I suffered a backlash not because of my music but because of me - my atrocious personality probably," she told the Daily Star.
"I don't give away too much about my private life so the media just make it up. It doesn't matter what I do or don't say.
"I can just chill alone for months and still be labelled the biggest bitch in the world."
The 22-year-old, who releases fourth album Colour Me Free on November 2, added she had more creative control over the new record.
"I finally got the chance to make music without people sitting over my shoulder and telling me what to think or play," she said.
